The Story Behind Frida's
The food and vision behind Frida's Taqueria and Grill is inspired by the spirit of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), a famous Mexican painter known for her intimate self-portraits, her surreal imagery, and her use of elements from Mexican folk art. After a crippling trolley accident, Frida spent most of her life bedridden and in pain. She said, "I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy as long as I can paint."
Great Food and Great Character
By Gavin - Jun 28, 2009
Frida Kahlo was a renouned Mexican artist and social
centerpoint with her husband Diego Rivera during the
decades before and after WWII. Her personal life was
filled with difficulty due to an accident early in
her life, but she persevered despite physical challenges
and the often narrow-minded social and political norms
of those years. It is fitting That Jack and Josh name
the new restaurant after Frida Kahlo. Dispite many
challenges they have succeeded in opening, and breaking
new ground in an unlikely area geographically for
the market potential they have identified. The result
is plain terrific! Kahlo believed in what she visualized
and that's what we have at Frida's Taqueria & Grill.
The boys have translated Frida's unique story and
time through their modern vision creating an original
celebration of styling and atmosphere by bringing
together the traditional joys of great upscale Mexican
food and drink that works so well with friends and
family. Consider what a calamari dish with guajillo
chili, pineapple and pumpkinseed sauce Feels like...
the first time. Yes. That's it. Or fresh prepared
& delicious guacamole prepped right at your table
done up in a volcanic stone pedstal while you watch.
Yes. Real volcanic stone. Then you get into the REALLY
good stuff, things like "tacos", in varieties including
chipolte barbeque shrimp...(eyerolling, eyeclosing,
swearing under your breath good..), or grilled skirt
steak with charred onions...(again...) or fried cod
with slaw and shallots. What? "Cod" in a taco? Well,
OK. And Tiger is a "golfer". First, forget everything
you have been poisoned with "Mexican". Program erase.
Frida's is that way with every menu item. The eyes
open, roll, then close while you savory-process what's
going on in your mouth. This is a First Time gastro,
all over. You have NOT been Here. Words that went
through my mind eating there last Thursday: Friendly.
Lively. Colorful. Cultural. Noisy, in a Good way...because
these people are all clearly having a very good time!
Every item brings distinctly different Spicy & Cool
& Crunchy appeal. Clearly "Mexican", without that
senseless misuse of The Heat. "It's" there, but in
thoughtful balance, after all, these guys Jack and
Josh, are, after all, Professionals! Then, there's
Hip & V Nice Staff. Great service. Cold beers with
spicey limes. I said I would not ruin the menu options
for you. GO see for yourself. I left KNOWING I would
be back. Frida's is a cultural celebration of tradition
and modern life on open display for you to enjoy,
perhaps understanding exactly what has been invested
to get to Here. Frida Kahlo died back in the Fifties.
Her lessons of Life and Art are now passing forward
from Her Times into the New Light. These days, we
are lucky to be able to celebrate These Times at Frida's
Taqueria & Grill, and there is no doubt Frida & Diego
would whole-heartedly approve. Jack, we're very proud
of you. See you soon. G
